St. Maarten

St. Maarten, between two nations

Pelican Marina Residences, our latest project on the Friendly Island of St. Maarten.
More information click here »

St. Maarten is the smallest island to be shared by two nations. The French and Dutch cultures, beautiful scenery, pristine beaches and excellent year round weather make St. Maarten a perfect vacation choice.

This enchanting Caribbean island offers not only duty free shopping and casinos but some of the finest water sports activities in the world. The island regularly hosts world class sailing tournaments, and the many reefs offer excellent diving. Its restaurants, cafes and bistros are recognized for their varied and excellent cuisine. The island's secluded bays, forts and historical buildings make sight seeing a popular past time.

Duty Free Shopping

Front Street and Black Street in downtown Philipsburg house dozens of shops offering a wide selection of items. You will find fine jewelry, designer clothing and, of course, the perfect souvenir to take home to your friends and family. St. Maarten is a duty free port making it an ideal place to shop. You can find considerable savings on many items such as cameras, electronics, silver, porcelain and crystal. U.S. dollars are widely accepted as well as traveler’s checks and most major credit cards. Shopping districts in both countries offer restaurants, snack bars and outdoor café’s for your enjoyment.

Sites of Interest

St. Maarten Courthouse - downtown Philipsburg
Built in 1793, this unique two story building housed the council hall, weigh station, post office and jail for many years. After some recent renovation it now is used exclusively by the court.

Historic Forts

Fort Amsterdam in Philipsburg dates back to 1631 and has been operated by the Dutch and Spanish. Fort Willem sits atop Fort Hill and dominates Philipsburg. It is easy to recognize by the television transmitting tower. Fort de Marigot is located on a hill high above the city of Marigot. The spectacular view from the fort makes the long walk to the top worthwhile.

Beaches

All beaches are open to the public. Some of the most popular sites are:

Baie Lonque - Secluded and quiet. Clothing optional.
Baie Orientale - Clothing optional offering wind surfing, and horseback riding. The entire bay is an underwater marine reserve.
Baie Rouge - Recognized as the most beautiful beach on the French side. The cove is expansive, and the water is a breathtaking shade of turquoise.
Dawn Beach - although a little difficult to get to, this beach on the Dutch side has fine white sand and the snorkeling is some of the best in the world.
Maho Bay and Mullet Bay - are popular beaches on hotel property but they are open to the public.
Oyster Pond - is considered the best beach for body surfing.

Golf

There is an 18 hole championship golf course at at the Mullet Bay Resort in Dutch St. Maarten. This excellent course designed by Joseph Lee is the only course on the island. Greens fees are $100. As many people play the course,
it is very important to reserve your tee time in advance.
